Since we are going to a new DOD employment system I think it would be a good time to rework the veterans preference system. Why is it that a retired military individual is treated as a non-vet during a RIF situation. I can understand a veteran with a disability having a leg up on everyone else. I do not think it is right that the retired military veteran should be the first out the door during a RIF. The retired military and the other veterans should compete on the same basis during a RIF. Why is it that a person that served 4 years in the Air Force should have preference over a retired individual during a RIF. I think if no disability is involved that a retired individual should be treated the same as any other veteran. Also why is it that a retired individual does not get severance pay if he is released during a RIF? Since we are revamping the system let us get it right, in regards to retired individuals, this time. The retired military individual is treated like a nobody during a RIF situation, and I feel it is time to correct that situation. The retired person spent 20 to 30 years putting everything on the line for his/her country only to be treated like a nobody during a RIF. Disabiliy aside, all veterans, retired or not, should be treated equally during a RIF situation.
