Since the federal government is spending the resources to revamp the civil service pay system, I feel its also time to address another issue. I was active duty Air Force from Dec 1976 (delayed enlistment from Aug 1976) until July 1981 (honorably discharged) and spent from Jan 1982 until Feb 1983 as a Air Reserve Technician (honorably discharged). The problem I have is that I spent 5 1/2 years in support of my country as active duty and reserve yet I'm not a "Veteran" according to the existing regulations. From what I have gathered over the years is that one had to have served active duty for 180 days prior to Oct 1976 to receive veterans preference. I certainly apologize for serving during peace time and not be able to gain veterans status within civil service. That sounded silly didn't it? I feel the same about my non-veterans status. I was very proud to serve my country and have continued to do so in a civil service capacity, yet I feel my record is blemished since my active duty contribution meant nothing to the Air Force. Lets take a look at the veterans preference regulations pertaining to civil service employment while we are at it.
