I've been under a pay-band system before, it was awful. I had a supervisor who did not like me, even though he gave me exceptional performance appraisals due to my work ethics, he still would not give me a decent raise. And when he gave me a raise, it was a fraction of the other raises he gave to his favorites. If a supervisor has a personality conflict with you, they can give you a bad performance appraisal and you basically will never get a raise. How do you keep favorism out of the system? At least with a step increase, the supervisor couldn't keep you from getting that small raise. Leave the present pay system alone!
