As a civil servant for over 20 years, I am working toward retirement with a plan that includes regular raises and my TSP. One of my concerns is that although I'm not worried about getting outstanding appraisals, is there going to be funding for my supervisor to give me a raise that would make up for a step increase and cost of living increase that I would have received in the current system. Where is the money coming from for the supervisors to hand out raises? Because, if it comes from the local level, us civils at Charleston AFB can hang it up, because we'll never get a raise. And how can OPM take away cost of living raises? I though everyone received cost of living raises. On another note, I'm 53 years old and not in shape to be deploying. If I'm task to deploy and I refuse, can I be fired? One of the reasons I did not join an armed service many years ago was because I didn't want to go to war, and even if a deployment means not putting me in harms way, it would still take me away from my family, and I didn't sign up for that. I can't believe OPM would just decide to change a system where the personnel are dedicated and support the US military by holding down the fort while our active duty go to war, transfer from base to base, change jobs regularly, separate, retire, go to training, etc... who do you think stays and runs the show? Even when Congress passes a new bill usually there are clauses that protect people who have paid into a system or have longevity to where it doesn't affect them. Change the OPM system for the new personnel coming on board and leave us lifers alone to continue to work toward retirement.
