I have been out of college for approximately one year. I have been employed with the Federal Government for about seven months. I had many job opportunities when I left school that would have put me in a better situation than my current $35,000/year (GS-07) salary in Washington, D.C. I wanted to to serve my country and feel like I was a part of something great. Money is not my driving force. However, after rent, insurance, gas, car payment (used and fuel efficient), school loans, groceries, phone, electric, and miscellaneous expenses I am not left with much at all. I do not drink away paychecks like many my age. I would love to start saving for an engagement ring, wedding, house, and family one day. I can't do that on $35,000 per year in DC. I knew money would be tight before I accepted the job. But the second year, I would go up to $42,000, and the thrid into the $50's, and finally into the $60's before promotions became competitive. I expected to be on a certain career ladder. That is how I justified taking my current job. I am a intelligent, honest, hard worker. I have no problem being paid for performance. However, I am not going to sit around and wait for this to benefit me. NSPS is to be implemented in July, 2005, about two weeks before my first grade increase. If I do not get that increase (whether it be under NSPS or the current GS system) I will not be around for another year. I would love to stay with the government, but I am not going to suffer another year making my current salary. I am not "whining." I knew I would have to budget and control my spending. I have done that and managed to have a little bit in the bank to fall back on. But I need to get to a better position and I know I can do that if I leave the government. I urge the "powers that be" to consider my situation. I don't know yet whether NSPS will help or hurt me. I hope it will help, and will definetly wait to see. The Federal will lose a lot of good, young minds if they do not provide sufficient compensation. I urge you to include a way that new workers can continue on their current system. Thank you.
