As a union stuart of union 1858, I personally disagree with the language of the law that government employee rights have. I do not agree with management hiring and firing without just cause and pay banding in the fire department. I agree that fire department throughout the states should remain GS pay grades. As a governement employee of the Redstone Fire and Emergency Services, we have been short handed and understaffed for the past 12 years. There has been, in my opinion, no sight of hiring in the near future. I believe the upper management has not done their jobs to assure us proper amount of personel, to fulfill our mission in a SAFE MANNER. I also believe MR. Rumsfield pushed these issues through Congress. We hope Congress will not pass these bills without looking into our side of it, without seeing where we stand in this decision, because it will affect us and not them. We feel like the fire department will be contracted out in the near future, and the people who have worked in the federal service for the past 18 years or so, will have nothing to show for it, if this decision is made. Mr. Rumsfield has, in my opinion, made these decisions, to include working rights and conditions, are gone forever. This also includes the Fair Labor Standard Act. I feel as young poeple come into the system, they will not have any future, because the emission that the government and homeland security. We feel that we are being penalized for the decsions that Mr. Rumsfield has endured on government emplyess and contractors.
