By not considering seniority in RIF retention you are basically going to be practicing age discrimination. Supervisors can pick who they want to keep - a buddy, an affiar, or whatever. If you are close to retirement then the opportunity exists for you to be selected for RIF and not allowed to continue accruing your retirement years. If you have a good manager that recognizes your work you may be safe, but too many times people have vindictive managers that like to pit workers against one another and play favorites. Seniority was the equalizer before and you wish to take that away now. This is not fair to the employees who have worked hard for many years. I have 24 years in and have always received exceptional appraisals - but that can all change now if I get a supervisor that thinks I am too old, too fat, or something else. I have given 24 years to this organization, received awards for job performance and been a team player. Now - I am going to be opened to job descimination based on my age?
