The concept of rewarding an employee based on performance sounds great; however, I'm concerned that every manager won't be equitable in their actions. I was in management from 1983 to 1999 with the Department of the Army and the Department of Defense, I know that inequity exists on a broad scale. I believe that employees should be paid based on performance, but too often managers allow their personal feelings for employees determine if an award will be given and to what extent. I strongly recommend that performance based awards are monitored by an independent group and audited by a different independent group to ensure that all employees are treated fairly. Experience tells me that the majority of employees will give 100% to the mission of the team and the organization if they're treated with respect and equity.
