In the days after the 9-11 terrorist attacks Secretary Rumsfeld stated he could not get DoD employees where he needed them because there were too many damn unions to deal with. Frankly that statement and attitude is bunk. Our local’s union officials immediately contacted the Wing Commander, told him we were holding our contract in abeyance, and whatever assistance he needed the “civilian technician force” was at his beck and call. Two hours after the attacks our Air National Guard unit had F-16s armed and flying combat air patrols 24/7. The technicians also armed three other ANG unit F-16’s. Technicians worked 16-20 hours that first day then went into a 12 on - 12 off shift not leaving the base for next three days. You can’t possibly state title 32 technicians are an impediment to national security. If there were no title 32 technician force the Air Guard would not exist. Now with NSPS we will have the “few” rights and protections under federal law either removed or reduced. Limited collective bargaining, loss of a neutral hearing by the FLRA, and a questionable pay system dictated by a performance evaluation from untrained supervisors that will show bias and predjudice towards employees. Is this the thanks we get for our dedication?
