Once again, our “Higher-ups” are looking at revising a program that has been going strong for years. Having recently retired from the Army, I’ve seen and have been placed in situations where individuals, who did not suck-up to the leadership, were either removed from their positions or denied promotion, based on this prejudice from the leadership. Although evaluations and other reports are developed to prevent the old buddy system, it is still going strong in dealing with promotions, awards, and job placement in the Army. In the short time that I have been a DA civilian, I have seen this in the area where I work. If, from what I’ve read about the proposed system, I hate to think of what it will do to the morale and productivity of the employees. The people in this office are all hard working and enjoy their jobs. Having to keep looking over our shoulders will have a negative effect in the morale and productivity of the directorate. Once again the Secretary of Defense supports a program that he himself will not be subject to. Perhaps next time someone calls for his resignation, they should look at this program and see if he supports it then. Being a Disabled Veteran, I’m discussed that a 23 year old could come work for the government, develop a good “working relationship” with a supervisor more their age, and easily bump a veteran out of a position. This is a bad idea; if the wheel is not broken, don’t fix it.
