I have read the comments and appreciate the people who have said that the rules are good because the dead weight does not need to be rewarded and that they, being new, should make as much as the seniority people because they do more. I salute your remarks and I do understand where you are coming from. I do not totally disagree with you. I know you and work with you. I admire and respect you and wish I could be like you. I was you once. I was young, brand new, and an energetic Engineer with the Corps of Engineers. I worked hard and outperformed most of the older workers and I was rewarded. I said - why don't these old farts just leave. I also thought that I deserved more money. Now, I am an old fart and you are right. I am tired and worn out and I do feel like deadwood. I do feel depressed about that because I know that you are far more technically advanced than me. I also know that I gave 23 years of hard work to help make this organization great. I was part of the DOD organiztion that helped end the cold war and made this Country a safer palce for you to grow up in. I do have a family to take care of and I do have to work. Some people my age are supervisors who go to meetings all day long - not technical at all. Some are higher technical grades and they deserve it - but still they are not in production like we are. These people rose to a level that you respect - I did not. Not everyone can be supervisors or technical experts. I do not expect respect from you - respect has to be earned and. When I was your age, an older Technician gave me some advice - do not get old at the Corps of Engineers. I will not pass that on to you as you will not understand. You are still my friend and I do give you two pieces of advice from the bottom of my heart - Do not make anyone at work angry at you and above all, Do not screw up. I wish you well.
