While the union asked me to comment on this, I am generally not a big supporter of the unions. I don’t really understand how this new system may change things for Federal workers. I do know that I am in command of a ship for MSC as Captain. I spend many months from home in support Us troops. I have done so for some 25 years. While there are a lot of rumors out here I’m sure the truth lies somewhere in between. To reclassify me as a US Naval Officer, reduce my pay, not pay me overtime, and take away my civil service retirement will only result in my departure from the organization as fast as possible. I am not the only one that feels this way. Hence, you in the upper levels of government should understand that if you change things too much you will reduce the sealift abilities of the US to a very dangerous level. MSC carried some 90 plus percent of the war materials in both gulf wars and I doubt you could do without the unsung heroes. We may not be well known, but we would be well missed.
