Putin prepares post-war Iraq draft UN resolution

Russia's President Vladimir Putin, says his government has prepared a draft new United Nations resolution on post-war Iraq.

President Putin says the United States has suffered considerable moral and financial losses in Iraq.

He says the resolution, which could be put to the UN Security Council, is aimed at reinforcing an international presence to rebuild the war-torn country.

Washington has been opposed to the idea of a UN-sponsored multinational force in Iraq, but has recently softened its position as it seeks support for its peacekeeping mission there.

Mr Putin says he has discussed the issue with the US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, and says their respective positions are getting closer.
